ZZZquil vs CBD

Let's address one of the most frequent questions we get:

Why should I use CBD instead of ZzzQuil?

In order to answer that question, we need to take a closer look at ZzzQuil and figure out whats inside, how does it work and how does it affect you long term. So let's get down to business.

What is ZzzQuil?

ZzzQuil is an over the counter medication. It is a cheap, non-opioid based sleep aid that utilizes quite a few different chemicals to achieve the sleep results.

What are the Ingredients in ZzzQuil?

  • FD&C BLUE NO. 1
  • FD&C RED NO. 40

How does ZzzQuil work?

DIPHENHYDRAMINE HYDROCHLORIDE, the active ingredient that makes ZzzQuil effective is an Antihistamine that is used to treat the symptoms of allergies and common colds. The drowsy effect that it creates is a side effect of the chemical blocking the central nervous system's ability to produce histamines that are responsible for the feeling of wakefulness.

What are the side effects of ZzzQuil?

Drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, upset stomach, blurred vision, dry mouth/nose/throat and seizures are all symptoms of Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride Liquid (the active ingredient in ZzzQuil). Granted, we can assume that serious side effects are rare or products like ZzzQuil wouldn't be allowed on the market!

I have no intention of fear-mongering or making it seem as though terrible things will happen to you if you take ZzzQuil, I am just relaying the same information that they publish! Again, I doubt there is any substantial risk of any serious side effects when taking over the counter sleep aids.

How Does CBD work as a sleep aid?

Full Spectrum CBD is a powerful anti-inflammatory plant compound. While some cannabinoids are naturally sedative, research shows that CBD alone (Isolate) is not sedative. When you use a Full Spectrum CBD product (like Common Ground REST Tincture) you are getting the powerful anti-inflammatory properties of CBD, the naturally sedative properties of CBN (an ancillary cannabinoid), the sedative and relaxing properties of terpenes Myrcene and Linalool (found in high levels in Lavender, Mango, Jasmine and Passion Fruit -- all of which are natural sleep aid remedies) and various vitamin, antioxidant and fatty acid building blocks for your brains natural production of serotonin and dopamine.

Woof... that was a lot of information.

CBD vs ZzzQuil

ZzzQuil is a powerful sleep aid.  It is also very accessible (can be found in every drugstore in America) and very cheaply. The question really lies in what the whole slew of artificial chemical ingredients are doing to your body, both short term and long term.

CBD products, like REST, are natural and plant based with only a few organic ingredients.

  • Organic Hemp Extract
  • Organic Coconut Derived MCT Oil
  • Organic, Plant extracted Terpenes

What are the side effects of CBD?

Some researchers have cited Dry Mouth and Drowsiness as potential side effects of CBD. When high quality hemp extracts are used and properly dosed, the likelihood of any side effect is extremely small. That being said, every human body is different! We recommend those new to CBD start with small doses (average adult: 10-20mg per day) and dose up as required. This will help you to best understand how your body reacts to CBD and where you should settle on dosage!

In Summary...

We are of course biased... We wouldn't create Cannabinoid based products if we didn't believe in their effectiveness, but I believe the science speaks for itself. Natural plant medicines like Full Spectrum Hemp Extracts can be used to effectively treat a variety of ailments. We formulated REST to take advantage of vast array of tools that nature has given us to address sleep disorders and specifically avoided additives that might adversely affect users or that we knew were responsible for any side effect, great or small. While more costly than most over the counter sleep aids, our CBD products are designed with your long term health in mind. Health is Wealth and taking care of your body is an investment, not an expense!
